I was never a fan and I wouldn't have watched this (I think) if it didn't garnered a whopping 97% on RottenTomatoes.com.
Back in the 80's, my preferences were He-Man, Transformers, G. I. Joes and the likes. Those were infinitely more interesting.
But this movie, I had to check it out.
Right from the beginning, singing their main theme song, I got sucked in straight away.
I have to take my hat off to Jason Segel for really creating such a lovable and funny movie. And to star in it in his full height, and to sing and make it work too, very commendable.
And Amy Adams kept up the whole way through too. Great casting to have brought Adams in. Chris Cooper as the antagonist however was a bit weird for me though. He seemed comfortable most of the times.
But of course the real stars were the Muppets. And it all came back to me while watching the movie, Kermit was probably the only one I could tolerate. The rest I just couldn't get. Especially Miss Piggy with her extra high-pitched voice. To listen to her sing was never pleasing for me. Plus that whole pig-frog relationship have always troubled me when I was young.
As a Muppets movie, the many plot holes were forgivable. But it was the middle of the movie where I had trouble keeping my eyes open, that's when the pacing was just too slow for me.
But towards the end, once they started performing in their element, that's when their brand of magic came back again.
This particular style of humour that Segal had injected, I can't remember whether or not it was the same as well back when they were on TV, was refreshing. And to keep splashing the screen with famous faces was a
cheap thrill but entertaining nonetheless.
Overall, the mix of humans and muppets never for once looked weird onscreen and I thought the script was well-written for a Muppets genre.
