This wasn't epic. This didn't have to be epic. But with what the writers produced, it felt pretentiously epic. The first half took too long to establish. They probably could have skipped a lot of subplots and shorten the running time to something less "epic". Then it may have been more enjoyable.
The dialogue was weak - the actors had a tough time sounding convincing with their explanation as they moved the story along. The plot progression had holes, and even looked stupid sometimes. Like when Taylor Kitsch playing Carter, when he first rescued Lynn Collins character just because she's human, funny thing was he went on to fight the other humans chasing her. So that was a stupid thing to say initially.
The action thankfully was better. Even though it didn't have any fancy moves, but at least they were entertaining.
And the way it ended too wasn't a disaster. Though I would have liked to see the writers took their time developing Carter's nephew segment in the sequel, instead of cramming everything in to that last 10 minutes.
