Pitch Perfect (6/10)

With all the popularity gained by musicals, Pitch Perfect had potential to be as great as Bring It On but the latter came out over a decade ago. And this new movie didn't quite update too much in the writing department.

The story was nothing special. It was very basic actually. The writers were going for cheesy but in an ironic way, however sometimes the irony just didn't come out very clearly. Either that or I was the one reading it wrong and they were actually serious.

I still couldn't believe how much and how strongly the stereotyping of Asians were in this movie. Not one, but they had to use two Asians in two different subplots; who amounted to nothing in the end and were purely used for laughs only. It's borderline insulting. Why was the timid girl even accepted into the group anyway? It made no sense when they couldn't even hear her sing.

And what about that final number? Every other team only used 2 or 3 songs whereas our "heroes" mixed and mashed like 10 songs. Making them clearly the winner. That's just crappy movie-making.

But lucky for the movie that it managed to get Anna Kendrick who was the best thing in the movie, though Brittany Snow and Anna Camp were much better than the characters that were created. But I was disappointed with Rebel Wilson who looked awkward most of the time.

Another spark of funny came from the commentary duo of John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks. They added a lot of layered humour a la the style of 30 Rock.

As this was sort of a musical, the music was an important factor in entertaining the audience. And I have to say there were a couple of mash-ups that were done very well, but none of them appeared in actual competition performances.
