The Thieves (6/10)

Me giving this a 6 is quite unfair. I had to watch this with no English subtitles. It came only with Malay and Chinese subtitles, and I'm ashamed to say that I read better in Malay than Chinese...

However, about 20 minutes in the middle, English subtitles actually came out. I don't know how or from where, but I was happy for it. Until it disappeared again.

So it was hard to understand the whole story, even when two or three characters started talking in English, it was also difficult to understand because their pronunciations were not that good. What's more when the storyline was a web of complexity.

The Koreans are always good in marrying comedy with drama or action. And usually towards the end it's full blown seriousness when they threw all humour out the window. When done well, it works. In this case, I thought it did.

The story was good. It was mostly well paced and the actors played their parts well. I thought getting Simon Yam was also a very good choice. Though the love connection later on was a bit doubtful when watching it, but that was just the plot attempting at a bit of dramatic effects.

The action was top-notched. But there were some parts that were unrealistic and didn't quite have continuity. The action sequences involving scaling up and down the side of a building was ridiculous and obviously was done purely for effects. It's just crazy when everyone involved in that sequence knew how to scale a building. It took the realism right out of the movie.

And funny to see Gianna Jun in a very similar character to My Sassy Girl once again. I guess she's pigeon-holed herself to this role.
