Like the movie poster, here's another chance for Jay Chou to show off with a pet project. Like those abs, which he did flaunt quite a few times.
The first half I really enjoyed. I loved the set pieces, the costumes, the vibrancy of the colours, and even bits of his direction and characters where humour was employed.
The set up was great, the cast was good (except newcomer Lee Hsin Ai and the over-acting of Kenny Bee) - everyone around Chou actually made him look bad so that's a good thing. Eric Tsang was pretty funny, albeit underused in the second half.
The song-and-dance numbers were welcomed even though they didn't serve any other purpose to the storyline sometimes but just for the sake of a song-and-dance number. They were well choreographed but some hip hop were loosely and clumsily added in just for the sake of their inclusion, which looked trite and unnecessary.
However, Chou really dropped the ball in the final act as everything fell apart all the way to the ending. It was such a bad way to progress to the end that all the good the first half has accumulated were insignificant by then.
Such a shame. Chou needs more time than just the 3 years since his first movie to hone his writing and directing skills more.
