The Lego Movie started off quite shaky, but ended up on a really high note.
Why it started shaky for me was because the first sequence introducing Lord Business and Vitruvius and their showdown was so fast paced that it seemed jerky. And the way the characters were moving a la real Lego minifigures and almost all the restrictions didn't help.
One other reason could be perhaps I have been keeping away from trailers so I didn't know to expect the jerkiness of the motion - especially in the action sequences.
And because of I have seen Lego the first three episodes of Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles, those movements were much, much smoother compared to The Lego Movie (I'm probably going to be called a negative bastard for saying this). So it did take a while to get used to it.
As for the voice acting, Chris Pratt was perfect. I didn't find any single flaw. Same goes to Elizabeth Banks as Wildstyle.
Will Arnett as Batman, on paper it looked perfect as well but the execution left me wanting a little bit more. I thought he should be funnier. I'm not sure about Channing Tatum as Superman, and even Morgan Freeman's Vitruvius was in and out for me. And so was Liam Neeson's Irish accent. Been in Hollywood for too long? And why did Cobie Smulders' Wonder Woman only had three lines?
The building up of the story was a bit weak. I thought many of the jokes in the first half were not as funny, but I think many would disagree with me (I'm probably going to be called Mr. Scrooge for saying this). Some were bordering on lame.
And the funniest bits were all references to other movies like Star Wars and Batman's character. Those were really funny though. The cleverest joke was Wildstyle's take on her relationship, "I have a boyfriend... It's super serious." So many levels of funny.
The second half was where it got a lot better for me. And towards the end, with Will Ferrel, that whole script spoke so much to me because he put into words my whole existentialism as a Lego collector.
And it's only then that everything became clear. The story really had a lot of heart and it was played out beautifully. So that alone was very satisfying.
And that darn song, it's stuck in my head.
I will give this another go soon, just to see if I see the magic that everyone else is seeing.
