Benedict Cumberbatch Joins The Jungle Book: Origins
With 2 live action Beauty And The Beast movies in development from two different production companies (one will be directed by Bill Condon while the other is currently in limbo ever since Guillermo del Toro and Emma Watson have dropped out to direct and star respectively), two different studios are also going to bring two different takes on The Jungle Book.
The first one, produced by Walt Disney Pictures, is directed by Jon Favreau and will be released on 9 October 2015, which will have the voice acting abilities of Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken, Lupita Nyong'o and Ben Kingsley.
The Origins version comes from the production house of Warner Bros. and will boast more motion-capture CGI because it is directed by the master himself, Andy Serkis. Not that his talent in motion-capture will certainly translate to his directorial debut, but this will be very interesting to see how Serkis will step out of the second unit director's chair and into the forefront.
And the latest news is that Benedict Cumberbatch has signed up to lend only his silky voice once again, together with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris and Serkis himself.
Cumberbatch and Elba will both be voicing the main villain, Shere Khan.
I may be over speculating but this looks like Warner Bros. is finding another way to take the fight to Disney's doors once again, as the DC / Marvel fight will be well underway once Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is released.
