Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Announces Sequel Despite Horrible Reviews
Last weekend, the Michael Bay reintroduction of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, directed by Jonathan Liebesman, finished Sunday with a whopping USD 65 million; and a worldwide figure of USD 93.7 million.
Wasting no time, Paramount immediately got the ball rolling for a sequel to be released 3 June 2016. Bay is of course back as a producer, and he's also confirmed Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec to return as writers. Liebesman has not been confirmed as director as of now.
So it looks like Bay is going to stick to a formula that has worked well for him - focus on explosions and minimise the cost on script.
I didn't fault too much on Liebesman's direction as I thought he did what he could with the script he was handed. The worst thing to have come out from the first movie was the script and dialogue. And with Bay getting back the same writers, it's clear what his direction for the sequel is going to be; unless Applebaum and Nemec come to their sense and realise the disservice they have done to the TMNT brand.
Yesterday while recording the audio review for The Popcorn Panel, I actually said that I welcomed a sequel for this franchise because it would be interesting to see where the story goes next. I'm still holding out hope that the script and story would improve and we get a much better movie than the first one.
