While Cutler could build scenes up to emotional moments, there still could have been some tighter pacing to reduce some of the slower parts.
Nevertheless, this was Chloe Grace Moretz's best dramatical performance to date. Going in, I was feeling slightly worried for Moretz who has not convinced me she can be a leading lady. Her previous blockbuster movies in which she played the lead (Carrie and Hugo) both didn't impress me. Finally, she has with this.
Jamie Blackley played the lead opposite Moretz was solid. So were the rest of the cast members, including Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard playing her parents, and especially the always dependable Stacy Keach playing her grandfather with a very emotional scene that I enjoyed very much - meaning I jerked back tears.
I quite liked the story, the relationship between the two leads, and the storytelling with all the flashbacks to tell the past. Also I liked how real the issues felt in the relationship and how cliche plot points were really minimised here.
But I wouldn't sit through the lengthy process of storytelling again though. This was a one-off for me.
