Before I Go To Sleep (7/10)
I haven't seen Nicole Kidman on the silver screen for quite a while now. I've always enjoyed her work so I jumped at the chance to watch this when I saw it still playing in Taipei.
Adapted from a S. J. Watson's novel by writer-director Rowan Joffe, the opening of the movie set up the plot nicely, where Kidman's character was a reminiscent of Drew Barrymore's in 50 First Dates. Only difference of course was that this was a serious dramatic thriller.
The movie, while started very slowly, kept the audience guessing as to who the real protagonist was. We kept going back and forth between two characters that had the most motive but could never really pinpoint which one.
Part of the fun was finding out who, but that really came to be nearing the third act. Meaning for most of the first half, it was just a slow build to where the story was going to lead us.
Mark Strong and Colin Firth both played their characters well, but Firth had a bigger role and was more enjoyable to watch.
Joffe was also quite skillful in creating the atmosphere, where it's cold and wet and that really suited the story as well. He used some close-up shots of certain objects to create a continuous ambiance for his movie, though I found some worked while a few had me in a nonchalant state.
