The Book Of Life (6.5/10)

Guillermo del Toro's stamp of approval and signature feel is prevalent in this Jorge R. Gutierrez visionary animated movie.

Especially when we first got introduced into the Land Of The Remembered, that definitely felt like del Toro had a hand in creating. It was a world that just oozed his brand of strange and fantasy. But what a beautiful fantasy. If nothing else, that was the scene that would win you over visually, with ease.

Gutierrez's story was also one that would easily hit the right spot in your heart. He told a fantasy story that was engaging and classical. Something that everyone could relate as well.

However, his shortfall was the script and dialogue; which I found were the weakest links in the entire movie. The dull back and forth and flat and predictable jokes were not good enough for most adults. But I'm sure kids would have no problems with them.

I also loved the type of characters created onscreen. And no complaints when it comes to the voice-acting by Diego Luna, Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Ron Perlman and Kate del Castillo. Even Christina Applegate's small role as the museum guide was perfect.

All except Ice Cube as the Candle Maker. I didn't get this character at all. I would be totally OK for him to be cut out. He was supposed to bring the message of "writing your own story" but the whole thing felt forced and under developed, and felt very abruptly introduced into the end.

This movie had so much potential but due to the writing for the most part, it failed to deliver there. No wonder I kept saying the trailers could never interest me much.
