Love On The Cloud (6/10)
At this point I'll watch anything with Angelababy in it. She's the cutest Chinese actress right now. Love On The Cloud was currently showing in Malaysia and I thought I'd watch it before the night ended.
I didn't think the trailer marketed the movie well. I went in not expecting what it was because almost half of the movie centered around the 3 friends wanting to make a movie but had to keep changing the script because their investor kept changing her mind.
It was cute for the first few, I even accepted the Bollywood version. But when it got to the horror version, I have to object. First, that shouldn't be there because everyone going into this movie wasn't expecting to be scared. I would even go as far as objecting horror trailers being shown in front of comedies or family movies because that's not the right audience for it. I once saw a lady had to cover her eyes because she probably couldn't take horror movies. Cinemas should be extremely sensitive to this.
But more so for movie makers. Inserting a horror section into a romantic comedy (as that was what was marketed) should be breaking some cinema law.
And second, that whole section didn't make sense at all with supernatural stuff. It dragged the movie on unnecessary without adding anything more into the plot.
What I did enjoy was the comedy. Even though the chemistry between Angelababy and Chen He was weak, but Chen had comedic chops and he was fun to watch. And for the first half of the movie, I really enjoyed myself.
But after the horror section, the movie took a turn into very bleak. There was a turn of event which I couldn't agree with as well because it was very unnecessary. Again, I went in thinking I was getting a rom-com but the ending was just not.
And with the way it ended, in the credit scene where director Gu Chang Wei paid tribute to Charlie Chaplin, was totally in the wrong mood.
