Jupiter Ascending (3.5/10)

What happened to The Wachowskis? What happened to their storytelling capability? It's not as if they can't direct a good story because they gave us The Matrix. It's not as if they don't know how to write because they gave us V For Vendetta.

Some would still argue for Cloud Atlas and I liked Speed Racer. But Jupiter Ascending looked like nothing more than a special effects galore.

The whole storyline was awfully convoluted. The squabble between, and each of the intention of the Abrasax siblings, were so difficult to understand because the expositions were too mind-boggling.

And yet sometimes the dialogue and plot were so simplistic that it looked and sounded trite and silly.

How the planets existed in the universe and in relation to Earth were also not clear. That's why it was so difficult to accept or believe the many different species or races that were thrown into the screen. And with the full use of CGI, the realism were all lost as well.

The Wachowskis also didn't direct their leads well, nor given them ample of space for development. Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis were not believable at all. Tatum's make-up did not help his case while Kunis was just bland. Needless to say they did not share any chemistry and their love story felt more like a sham.

I cringe at the words that came out of Kunis every time she tried to convince the audience she was in love, or had a change of wardrobe. No wonder Tatum's character never warmed up to her. Worse was The Wachowski never let him. And I never could get behind them, cheer or worry for them.

Only (and especially) Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth and Tuppence Middleton had  some acting moments as the Abasax siblings; and they did the best they could with the script.

Other characters like the hunters, while looked cool onscreen (like Doona Bae's character), never amounted to anything like Bobba Fett.

A rarity here was that Sean Bean wasn't killed off! Too bad that there won't be a sequel for him to return to, I predict.

The fight scenes and space battle were very messy. I couldn't tell half the time what was going on. I was expecting The Matrix type of actin sequences but, like I said earlier, the focus here seemed to be on special effects only. And even so, nothing looked spectacular or new; or real for that matter. There was never a sense of realism throughout the movie.

Jupiter Ascending had the potential to be another great space opera like Guardians Of The Galaxy, but everything fell way off target.
