Oscars 2015 Winners And My Reaction
A couple of surprises, one or two that I wasn't happy with but generally speaking, personally, I'm quite happy with the results this year.
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM (watched 3 out of 5)
Big Hero 6 (my pick) [WINNER]
The Boxtrolls
How To Train Your Dragon 2 (will)
Song Of The Sea
The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya
I'm so happy that Big Hero 6 won. I really thought they would give it to How To Train Your Dragon 2 so when they announced Big Hero 6, I jumped out of my chair with my fist in the air! Congratulations!
BEST PICTURE (watched 6 out of 8)
American Sniper
Birdman (my pick, will) [WINNER]
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory Of Everything
Whiplash
No surprise here. It was really between Birdman and Boyhood but given what Birdman achieved technically to produce such a cinematic experience, it should go to Birdman.
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE (watched 4 out of 5)
Steve Carell for Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper for American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch for The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton for Birdman (my pick, will)
Eddie Redmayne for The Theory Of Everything [WINNER]
I thought with Keaton's body of work, they would give it to Keaton. When will he be nominated again? Whereas for Redmayne it was his first nomination, and he is bound to get a few more. I have no complaints because he was my second pick. And it was really a race between these two.
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE (watched 3 out of 5)
Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night
Felicity Jones for The Theory Of Everything
Julianne Moore for Still Alice (will) [WINNER]
Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl (my pick)
Reese Witherspoon for Wild
I haven't seen Still Alice so I can't complain. This was another one where I would have jumped out of my chair again if they had announced Rosamund Pike. She gave my favourite performance by an actress last year.
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (watched 5 out of 5)
Robert Duvall for The Judge
Ehtan Hawke for Boyhood (will)
Edward Norton for Birdman
Mark Ruffalo for Foxcatcher
J. K. Simmons for Whiplash (my pick) [WINNER]
I'm really happy for Simmons. Again, like Keaton, I'm not sure if he'll get another opportunity anytime soon. And it's great that now he'll forever have the words "Oscar Winner" before his name. I am a Simmons fan.
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (watched 5 out of 5)
Patricia Arquette for Boyhood (my pick, will) [WINNER]
Laura Dern for Wild
Keira Knightley for The Imitation Game
Emma Stone for Birdman
Meryl Streep for Into The Woods
I would have liked for Laura Dern or Emma Stone to win but they didn't stand a chance. Out of all of them, only Arquette had the most screen time. Her win was well deserved though Boyhood wasn't that high on my list of favourite movies from last year.
DIRECTING (watched 4 out of 5)
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Birdman (my pick, will) [WINNER]
Richard Linklater for Boyhood
Bennett Miller for Whiplash
Wes Anderson for The Grand Budapest Hotel
Mortem Tyldum for The Imitation Game
Again, it was really down to Inarritu and Linklater but, again, what Inarritu did for cinema was more astounding than Linklater's amazing work.
CINEMATOGRAPHY (watched 3 out of 5)
Birdman (my pick, will) [WINNER]
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Ida
Mr. Turner
Unbroken
One of the reasons why Birdman was such an accomplishment was because of its cinematography. The cinematographer and director both had to really work hand-in-hand to create the magic we experienced.
ORIGINAL SCORE (watched 4 out of 5)
Alexandre Desplat for The Grand Budapest Hotel [WINNER]
Alexandre Desplat for The Imitation Game
Hans Zimmer for Interstellar
Gary Yershon for Mr. Turner
Johan Johannsson for The Theory Of Everything (my pick, will)
This was a race between Johannsson and Desplat, I felt. And it could have gone either way, and either one of Desplat's work above. I just preferred Johannsson's score though, but I'm totally fine with Desplat winning it.
ORIGINAL SONG (watched 2 out of 5)
"Everything Is Awesome" from The Lego Movie (will)
"Glory" from Selma
"Grateful" from Beyond The Lights
"I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from Glen Campbell...I'll Be Me
"Lost Stars" from Begin Again (my pick)
Only saw 2 out of the 5 nominated films. I am not that big of a fan of "Everything Is Awesome" even though I'm a huge Lego fan, so I had to go with "Lost Stars". But "Glory" took it. And from the reaction of the crowd during the live performance, I can understand why. But how much did Lego had to pay the Oscars for that marketing stunt though!
VISUAL EFFECTS (watched 5 out of 5)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (my pick, will)
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Interstellar [WINNER]
X-Men: Days Of Future Past
Finally, one that I'm not happy with. I thought the achievement for the live-action apes was much greater than the Interstellar's space experience. I knew Interstellar had a chance of winning this too but I just thought the Academy would celebrate what Apes were able to do. I mean, the whole movie was like watching real apes acting! C'mon!
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY (watched 3 out of 5)
American Sniper
The Imitation Game [WINNER]
Inherent Vice
The Theory Of Everything (my pick, will)
Whiplash
Honestly, I didn't know who would win. I just preferred the story of The Theory Of Everything as compared to everything else here. But I'm happy with this winner because we got to witness quite a good winning speech given by Graham Moore.
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY (watched 5 out of 5)
Birdman (my pick, will) [WINNER]
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler
I wasn't sure and thought this could really have gone to another movie but I called it. And I'm happy that it won because Birdman definitely was quite the all-around star. It had everything going for it. So, well deserved!
