Home (4/10)

First of all, Home is not a good name for this new Dreamworks animated movie. Maybe "Moving Home" would have been more apt.

Second, the trailer for this movie did the job of getting people interested. I was interested watching the movie. There were some good bits in the trailer that I remember enjoying.

And fans of "The Big Bang Theory" would want to see (or rather, hear) Jim Parsons voice acting in this one.

But what I got from the actual movie was quite a bore. This movie is rated NFA - Not For Adults.

The first two acts were slow, silly and nonsensical. The story development were almost none at all. The protagonist was a seventh grader so that's one indication of who the target audience of the movie is for.

All the dialogue was very weak. They didn't really help to push the story forward, instead we were force fed all Rihanna's song down our throats. Worse is when I don't even like Rihanna. And how is she a good icon for kids anyway?

The only thing that would have saved the movie was the final act. That's when, and also for the first time; the story, the characters and everything else came together to form a coherent storytelling event.

But alas, the pacing of the movie suffered too much in the first half. The jokes were not funny to adults even though some were aimed at us. Even in the short running time of 94 minutes, it felt more like close to 2 hours.

And as for Parsons, there really wasn't any acting required other than copying his TV series personality as Sheldon Cooper. But at an even more annoying level. Rihanna was no better. Only Steve Martin was competent and made some of his lines work.

As a kid's movie, I suppose it's a good one. That's all I can say.
