Predestination (8/10)

You will either love this movie or just can't accept it.

I have not even heard anything about it but it came highly recommended by another movie fan so, while in Taipei, I saw this was still playing with limited time slots, I had to go for it.

The movie started one way, then took a hard turn and went on in another direction. A weird direction considering how it started. And that subplot went on to cover the entire first half of the movie. But what an incredible back story.

Then, things all went berserk as the story began to unfold slowly.

There's no way to say much more about the movie without spoiling it so, to keep this review spoiler free because I'm sure no one has caught this, I'll just say I highly recommend this if you like movies that blows your mind.

I found that there's one mistake through the interaction between Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook's characters towards the end of the bar scene, where Hawke revealed a name from Snook's past. Snook should have had more questions but somehow the Spierig Brothers decided to skim over that fact.

One thing I found quite interesting was how much Snook resembled Leonardo DiCaprio. And that got me to imagine if DiCaprio actually took over from Snook halfway through, imagine the performance level he would have given to this movie. But Snbook still gave a very compelling performance here that I'm very happy with.

For the rest of the movie, with the subject matter, there were bound to be loopholes. But as far as I can remember, I thought the Spierig Brothers did very well to tell a very complicated story. It was just a shocking experience that was reminiscent of Oldboy... just a little.

And like Oldboy, I'm still reeling from how it ended, I just can't be sure of how to rate it, if it should be higher or not. But for the moment, it's an 8.
