Josh Trank Steps Away From Star Wars Anthology
It is with great sadness that I discover this morning, Chronicle and the upcoming Fantastic Four director, Josh Trank, is stepping away from the second Star Wars Anthology movie.
Trank was first recruited back in June last year, the second director to be attached to a Star Wars spin-off movie after Gareth Edwards.
Truth be told, I am more of a fan of Trank than Edwards at this point. Chronicle clearly was a better movie than Godzilla if I were to just compare the movies that I've seen from these two young and talented directors. I loved Trank's direction and writing for Chronicle as it became one of my favourite movies of 2012.
In Trank's official statement, he said that, "After a year of having the incredible honor in developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I'm making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I've put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart I want to pursue some original creative opportunities.
"That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn't be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone else at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all."
Still, nobody walks away from a Star Wars project other than for some misalignment somewhere. Disney and Lucasfilm must have found some disagreeable points in Trank's vision for the movie. So, inevitably, like Disney's Ant-Man and Edgar Wright; ways must be parted.
And no wonder Trank was absent at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.
This second spin-off movie, however, remains in production at Lucasfilm under the Anthology umbrella.
