American Heist (4/10)

After watching this movie, it feels like what I've been hearing about Fantastic Four - which I have lost all anticipation and excitement for (I'll still go watch it but maybe tomorrow).

The entire first two acts of American Heist, with the focus on Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen and their relationship as brothers; they were brilliant.

Minus the Jordana Brewster's scenes which I did not care for a single bit at all, everything else in the first two acts were gripping. And add in someone like Tory Kittles playing the no-nonsense yet poetic tough guy, it's like the stars were aligning for this movie.

Then came the final act with the actual heist taking place. Nothing that could have gone wrong didn't. Everything was just crap. It's like another director stepped in to take over the movie but it was probably just Sarik Andreasyan in way over his head when it came to creating action sequences.

Nothing about the shoot-out made logical sense. Police shooting into the bank when there were civilians all around. The criminals shooting back unnecessarily when they can grab hostages as cover. The streets somehow were just empty. An unnecessary blow-up of a helicopter that looked ridiculous. The third act just threw everything it has built previously out the window with its over-the-top reimagining of a heist event.

Apart from Kittles, Brody was the best thing about this movie. His acting was top-notched. Christensen fell apart in the end but started strong as well. Akon was just horrible and the director should have re-shot some of his lines. Brewster as usual was a weak link.

I said the first two acts were gripping, but it needed a good finish to close it. Unfortunately, the third act was a disaster which cancels everything good about the first two acts.
