Rob Marshall To Direct Sequel To Mary Poppins
Probably a smart move by Walt Disney Pictures when delving back into one of the most beloved property, Mary Poppins. This movie is a timeless classic which many will detest a remake.
But business is business, and this has the potential to make more big bucks for Disney; but also has a high tendency to be a failure. Huge comparisons are a foregone conclusion.
Nevertheless, Disney has found the right director to helm this family musical. Variety reports that Rob Marshall has been given the responsibility to bring this character back to life on the silver screen. Marshall is an Academy Award nominated director, in which he led the 2002's musical Chicago to winning the Best Picture, while directing Catherin Zeta-Jones to her first and only Oscar win.
Marshall also recently directed another Disney musical, Into The Woods; though the second half of the movie didn't live up to the magical first half. Still, Meryl Streep earned another Oscar nomination for her role in this movie.
As for Mary Poppins, it's going to be very interesting, and a challenging task for Marshall, in casting an actress that can do what Julie Andrews did. Now that's a tall order.
No word yet on a release date for the movie.
