Goosebumps - Review (6/10)

While I have never read any of R.L. Stein's books, I could still appreciate how this movie has given its fan base a great cinematic adaptation; so much so that I could feel what the books are all about just by watching this movie.

Credit goes to director Rob Letterman for bringing Goosebumps to the silver screen. I did somewhat enjoy his previous collaboration with Jack Black on Gulliver's Travels back in 2010, and once again I thought he directed Black well in this one.

I also liked Dylan Minnette kind of taking the lead role and playing the hero in this, while Ryan Lee provided the comic relief with that high-pitched shriek of his. The only weak link here, unfortunately, was Odeya Rush who was quite wooden throughout.

It's easy to want to compare Goosebumps to the great Jumanji because their premise is a little similar. But the CGI, though two decades apart, did not look as good as I had hoped it would. In my memory I still think Jumanji looked better with real life plants and animals, rather than having everything computer generated like in Goosebumps.

I would have liked to see a different ending with Rush's character but being what it is, I guess there's no chance of that. Still, I'm not sure how that love story will work in the long run.

But if the movie had successfully captured what the books were, then its fans should be happy. And since I'm not its target market and I was still able to be entertained, this should be considered a win. Now depending on how much money it makes worldwide, we may be getting a sequel.
