Tom Cruise Confirmed For Universal's The Mummy

Universal Pictures has a plan to create a shared monster universe, because that is the popular thing to do now for the cinema.

To kick things off, the first movie being introduced will be The Mummy.

And Variety has reported that Tom Cruise has actually been signed on as the first cast member for said movie.

This comes as quite a surprise because Cruise, an action actor with enough pull in the industry, who can make a phone call and have just about any director he wants, has chosen to sign up to star in The Mummy - a property and a franchise that up until now looks like a fluff piece.

Not anymore. With Cruise onboard, Universal may actually have a serious franchise on their hands that has enough substance to attract a star like Cruise, who will have to take time out of his very busy, action-oriented schedule, to shoot this movie. And he may be even sign on to more than just one film too.

Alex Kurtzman is set to direct the movie, which will be his first major, big budget full-length movie; from a script written by Jon Sphaits, who has recently written for Doctor Strange and also Prometheus.

The Mummy is scheduled to be out on 21 October 2016.
