Idris Elba To Join Stephen King's Dark Tower

Stephen King's Dark Tower is being developed into a series franchise at Sony Pictures and MRC Studios.

It has been a long gestating process developing both the movies and a concurrent TV series, but the studios have finally found their director and possibly the main lead for the franchise. The original movie version for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's director Nikolaj Arcel, who also directed the Academy Award-nominated Best Foreign Film, A Royal Affair, is set to direct the first movie.

Matthew McConaughey has been the front runner for the studio to play the antagonist, Randall Flag - The Man In Black; and today Deadline has reported that Idris Elba is negotiating to play the protagonist Roland Deschain - The Gunslinger.

Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner have written a script which is based on the first book of the seven-book series.

I have never read Dark Tower (because there are seven books and my to-read list isn't getting any shorter), so I don't know if McConaughey's character will last throughout the entire series. And it is still unknown whether the movies will be seven installments (it may probably end up being three or four only).

But this also begs the question whether McConaughey will sign up for more than three movies. Speculations have suggested that the reason McConaughey turned down for a big role in Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 is because he couldn't or wouldn't commit to a multiple picture deal, which in Marvel's case could be between six to 12 movies.

So far, there hasn't been any confirmation yet from Sony nor McConaughey that he is indeed signed on. We'll just have to wait for further news of developments on the project, as well as a release date.
