Point Break - Review (4.5/10)
As a remake, this new Point Break wasn't even close to what the original one was.
The main problem came from the writing, if not the producers. The writing for this movie was abysmal. There was the overall storyline which was to attempt a string of unprecedented and daring extreme sports to achieve "enlightenment".
But everything else from plot point and plot devices to dialogue were all gibberish. The characters, especially Teresa Palmer's, were sometimes speaking in riddles and maybe reading off those inspirational posters with quotes.
Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez probably did the best they could with what they were given. And the character Pappas played by Ray Winstone was such a throwaway character that didn't get to do much at all, unlike the original movie.
How Ramirez's Bodhi and Bracey's Utah met also didn't make sense. Why would Bodhi rescue Utah in the first place when that moment was the only one he had to complete a "trial" from that list he had to do? That was out of Bodhi's character. And Palmer, albeit a newly created character, was such a weak plot device that I didn't even care what happened to her in the end.
This movie should have never been called Point Break. They even gave an explanation of why Utah was called "Utah" which was very unnecessary. It might have been a better movie had they named and marketed it as another movie about extreme sports.
So if you're a fan of extreme sports, this movie may offer some breathtaking shots. Otherwise, it's a waste of time.
