Legend - Review (7.5/10)
How Tom Hardy is not getting a lead actor nomination for his roles here is dumbfounding.
Portraying two roles, the Kray twins, London's gang leader of the 60's, Hardy once again elevated his acting chops to a point where you don't see him as Tom Hardy but as his characters. And both characters were so different that you really don't see two Tom Hardys but two different characters. That's an amazing feat.
The progression and beats of the story were interesting and compelling, following the Kray twins throughout that part of their lives. The only downside here was that director Brian Helgeland, more well known for his scripts than direction, did not deliver a movie that's worthy of Hardy's performances.
The first two acts I didn't had too much to complain about, but it was the crucial third act that kind of broke down in the beginning of it, only to be picked up again towards the end.
Emily Browning gave quite a good performance as well, but for the first time I saw how petite she actually is especially standing beside Hardy's physique.
Another interesting actor to note was Taron Egerton from Kingsman: The Secret Service, who had a smaller role here but I thought he stood out as a performer.
Paul Bettany was great onscreen but I only wish he had more screen time. Christopher Eccleston and David Thewlis provided strong supporting acts.
There was a strong British accent that wasn't easy to catch at the beginning, it got better once the ears adjusted. And that kind of set the tone for the movie, which felt and looked authentic.
But as a whole, with the way it was directed, I thought the movie went on about 15 minutes too long and lost me for a bit before getting back on track.
