Review: Finding Mr Right (5.5/10)

I stumbled onto the trailer of Finding Mr. Right, mainly because it's Tang Wei, and had mixed feelings about the trailer.

That was mainly due to the first few minutes into the movie when Tang's character first landed in Seattle and going through custom. That was in the trailer and that almost made me turn off the movie. But it was Tang's performance and the portrayal of that typical, haughty and snobbish Mainlander that are despised all over the world, and how accurate she captured that annoying characteristic.

The script by writer-director Xue Xiao Lu kept that character interesting and irritating at the same time in the first half. It kept my attention enough to made me kept watching. By the third act I was surprised I had become invested in these characters and was actually rooting for them.

Xue's writing and direction sometimes were good but at times were juvenile. Sometimes certain situations felt very forced and sometimes were completely unnecessary. But from the style of direction and storytelling felt quite modern and was enjoyable.

The winning formula here was still Tang who remains a great actor and I wish I had more opportunities to see her work.
