[Review] Finding Dory (8/10) & 'Piper' Short (10/10)

First, let's talk a little bit about the "Piper" short that's attached in front of Finding Dory. It's rare that Brunei cinemas get these shorts in front of Disney-Pixar's animated movies so this was such a treat. The did get the singing volcano one in front of Zootopia, but visually "Piper" was fantastic.

The CGI made the sandpiper birds and movements so realistic and made the baby bird so cute that I couldn't help smiling and didn't even realise I was doing it. And in just those short six minutes, the story even had time to not just include but emphasise on a strong message in it about facing fears and soaring.

As for Finding Dory, I was very sceptical going in to the movie because the trailers gave me the impression that it has the same beats and plot points as Finding Nemo. Even when coming from Pixar, I thought this could be another Cars 2. But I'm happy to report, it wasn't.

Ellen DeGeneres was still perfect as Dory. Her humour in her acting was always on point and she has really elevated Dory as a character to another level. The new cast of Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy and Kaitlin Olson made a great impact with their characters. So did Idris Elba and Dominic West's short cameos as the seals.

All of them were potentially scene stealers; but my favourites would be from the "Modern Family" cast: O'Neill's octopus and Burrell's dolphin. O'Neill's comedic timing and Burrell's character-voice-acting cracked me up.

But it was the direction of Andrew Stanton and Angus McLane that had the pacing very consistent and kept me attention on the silver screen from beginning to end. Not once did my mind wander because it could have easily done so in a sequel where it's once again finding family members. The directors also very subtly infused moments of Aliens and the horror genre in a couple of scenes.

And like most of what Pixar movies always have, the silence before the final part of the movie. Once again, it's done so well as I didn't see it coming; but it just wasn't enough to move me more. And maybe because it's a sequel, or maybe it just wasn't written well enough; the ending didn't leave me with that warm and fuzzy feeling.

It could also becbecause they included the turck-jacking sequence which was pushing the reality of this universe a bit too much for me. However, if they took out this whole sequence, I'm not sure it would change my rating either way.

So I went in worrying I may not like this movie, but ended up really enjoying it and this was a sequel that didn't waste anyone's time.
