[Review] Sleeping With Other People (8/10)
Sleeping With Other People caught me off guard because here I was expecting a romantic comedy, maybe one that wouldn't be that great anyway. Instead, just fifteen minutes in, I discovered this was more of a drama than a comedy, and it has substance - a lot of it.
Both lead characters were flawed and with real problems. Their only character flaw would probably be that they are that good looking. Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie had unlimited chemistry and probably gave the performances of their lives as far as I'm concerned. Their portrayals were what made this story believable and sucked the audience in to the magic of this movie.
The trailers did not sell this movie well enough. Even the poster said it's a "romantic comedy", not to mention a horrible representation of what the movie was.
This is only the second movie by director and writer Leslye Headland, and I'm definitely going to catch up with her first, Bachelorette. The pacing and direction were wonderful and each scene had a clear and strong purpose that added to the story. No scene was created just for laughs.
Adam Scott, Jordan Carlos and Amanda Peet were great supporting cast. And I've never seen Scott this serious or creepy. It showed him in another light, and extended his range.
The building of the relationship of the two leads had plenty of time to breathe and made the audience believe what the characters were feeling. Not once did it felt contrived or over-the-top. And that's the biggest strength Headland brought to her movie.
This is the perfect date night movie. You can't go wrong with this one.
