[Review] Alice Through The Looking Glass (6.5/10)

Director James Bobin has done a fair job of continuing the universe created by Tim Burton in the original Alice In Wonderland back in 2010.

Though this Alice Through The Looking Glass wasn't as entertaining and engaging as the first one, it was still an enjoyable journey back into Wonderland.

The movie started quite weakly as we come to find Mia Wasikowska's Alice as a captain of her father's ship. Her portrayal here wasn't convincing at all; not immediately pointing my finger at Bobin but Wasikowska just wasn't cut out for this scene.

But once back into familiar territory of Wonderland, things quickly fell into place. All the main characters were back and we got to know the new player here, Time; though not something entirely new from Sacha Baron Cohen.

Lewis Carroll's story, adapted once again by Linda Woolverton, anchored the story strongly. And it was Bobin's directing that sometimes were inconsistent in the storytelling and became distracting.

I'm not sure whether if it's Carroll's characterizations or Woolverton's adaptation that both the two leading ladies that were supposed to be on the good side, had so much flaws that it was hard to get behind them. Halfway through the movie I was rooting for Helena Bonham Carter's villain instead and that's not how you want your audience to feel.

But as mentioned before, the source of material was strong enough to tell a great story here and I found myself enjoying the movie more than feeling bored. And the amount of negative reviews for the movie I felt was a bit much.
