[Review] The Legend Of Tarzan (6.5/10)

Alexander Skarsgard has carved up an impressive torso for this movie, not to mention those blonde locks. If there's one thing great about this movie, it's that he portrays a great, older Tarzan. That and how beautiful he and Margot Robbie looked as a couple.

The direction by David Yates partly held up this movie, but also in certain parts, brought it down. Yates isn't great at doing close-up fight scenes. The fights in this movie, and there were plenty to go around, were all very uninspired and messily edited together. One of the best parts should have been the man versus the wild aspect, and that one was such a let down.

And that last end sequence with all the animals of the jungle, it was very rushed and kind of skipped over what I believe audience would like to see how certain things happen.

At less than two hours worth of running time, the movie definitely felt longer than it did. Somewhere in the second act everything just slowed down and got a bit dull.

But I enjoyed the overall story. I believe not entirely making this an origin story was the right move and there are so many directions the story could take. This particular one I have no complaints.

Christoph Waltz played a more delicious and formidable villain than his turn in Skyfall. I'm glad Yates has given Waltz the right direction, even though I thought his potential wasn't fully utilized in this movie.

I'm also surprised that Samuel L. Jackson was cast in this role. He looked so much younger than Nick Fury of the Avengers, and he played a much younger character too. He managed to create this character that did not entirely remind me that its Samuel L. Jackson under that facade, and this is a big plus because he is Samuel L. Jackson.

Djimon Honsou didn't have too much to do but he did what was needed. As for the two main leads, I like them and would like to see a sequel to this.

Yates in many ways was the right guy for the job. But in terms of action, I wished it was more like Leonardo DiCaprio versus the bear in The Revenant than what we got here.
