It was so baffling because the first act of the movie was a non-stop action fest that, if continued throughout the movie, would have been something spectacular. I have always been a fan of myths and legends both in the western and eastern cultures, which was what attracted me to this movie in the first place.
But once the second act started, the tone shifted so dramatically that I was just caught off guard. It's turned from a serious, action, kungfu movie to Star Wars: Phantom Menace - filled with CGI and CGI characters that had no business being there in the first place. Removing them and all the scenes they were in would have made this movie a much better entertainment piece. I'm talking about the talking plant that appeared only out of convenience, and the baby in the underwater kingdom. Atrocious.
There were so many characters that I had no idea why Jet Li even bothered showing up. The love story involving Angelababy should not have existed as well because there was no buildup and the characterisations were horrible.
The only reason I sat through the whole damn thing was because I was hoping for the third act to return to what the first act was. But no, in one death scene, I had to stop myself laughing out loud because of how poorly that was directed.
And every mishap here were the faults of the directors who didn't seem to know what they were doing. The lead character by Jacky Heung could have been a great warrior but the second act reduced him to a caricature while the third act rushed any development he might have had.
The ending was the most abrupt that I have ever witnessed, as if the directors did not know how to end it - which I believe was the case.
I should have walked out of this one as the thought occurred to me multiple times. But I kept hoping for what was never meant to be.
