[Review] Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (6.5/10)

Back to the Harry Potter world with Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. But like the first Harry Potter movie, I wasn't as impressed as I should be.

The special effects and the beasts themselves were the highlights for this first movie, and as they should be. They have to, actually, because it's in the title.

But where it didn't measure up was the storyline provided by J.K. Rowling herself for this script. For  me, the story didn't really take me to where I was hoping it to go; culminating in something fantastic.

It was a little predictable with the bad guys, the diversion never truly worked especially if you are familiar with how Rowling writes her characters (or so I'm told), and the last battle scene was a ho-hum.

What's more, I just didn't like the reveal of Johnny Depp's character. I much preferred if Depp was never in the picture as I didn't think we needed that reveal. If I can be a little cryptic, I just liked how things were.

Eddie Redmayne created yet another socially crippled character and I think it's high time he stayed away from these types of roles. The standout this time in the cast was Katherine Waterston, who didn't standout in anything else before this.

I also liked the character arc for Dan Fogler and liked the way it ended, but I have a feeling we'll see him again.

With the current success of this movie, I believe the prematurely-planned multiple movies (up to five) will probably move strongly ahead. Let's see how many of them will have David Yates' stamp.

A good start to a revitalized franchise, though to keep my interests the second movie will have to do better.
