[Review] Nerve (7.5/10)
When I saw the trailer for Nerve, I thought it looked horrible and I stayed away from it when it played at the cinema. But after it came highly recommended and after watching it on the plane, I was seriously impressed by this little film.
First of all, great script adapted by Jessica Sharzer from a novel that I did not know existed. I guess there must have been a reason it was adapted as I thought it was an original screenplay. There was a very important and relevant message in this whole movie about how kids today get sucked into the world of social media and cannot get out of. This movie highlighted how the Internet can continuously interrupt your real life if you let it.
Second, Emma Roberts and Dave Franco made this movie work. They have great chemistry together, Roberts can carry a movie if she has the right kind of support, and Franco can be a leading man under the right light.
The story flowed very well from start to finish and kept me hooked once the premise has been established and Roberts was in the game. I did not expect that to happen, so I give credit where credit is due and that's to the directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.
I even tried to find flaws in the story, like perhaps how Franco may not have needed to complete his final challenge; but I could still find explanations on my own why it had to happen.
Overall, a pleasant surprise from a movie that flew under my radar.
