[Review] Queen Of Katwe (8/10)
Long distance flights are the best times to catch up on missed movies and Queen Of Katwe was the first one I picked because it is the best kind of movie to watch on a plane.
This must be director Mira Nair's biggest movie to date. No doubt already a few accolades under her belt and an experienced director, but you can immediately tell that there was still something missing that would push her from good to great.
One of my biggest non-issue here, because it was an issue that could be overlooked, was how the script nor the direction gave important and emotional moments the space to breathe.
I thought, a little similar to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - both housed under the Walt Disney Pictures banner - there could have been more emotional pull from certain subplots that could have brought the audience deeper. But perhaps it was Disney's decision to not go in that direction as well, we'll never know.
But such great performances from David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o. While Oyelowo was good, it was Nyong'o that stood out the most and I would lobby for a Best Supporting Actress nod for her. Second to the main character, hers had the best arc.
Newcomer Madina Nalwanga was impressive as well with her infectious smiles and attitude, but her youth did show and her emotional range was slightly limited.
There were still those moments in the story that I thought should have been fleshed out more instead of just glazed over, but the movie did achieve what it set out to do - and that was to tell a great story and honour the characters which it was based off of.
The ending montage was a great send-off for those characters and Nair really shone there, even if it was just something small.
