[Review] The Birth Of A Nation (8.5/10)
Whether or not The Birth Of A Nation would have been nominated at the Oscars this year, we'll never know. Due to the personal history of writer-director-producer-actor Nate Parker, or due to the fact that other movies are in fact better.
Parker's passion project here was his first full-length feature as a director, and it's a pity he was not more experienced when he made this movie. His direction and storytelling while very good, but could have been better and more detailed in its narrative. There were a few scenes I thought skipped a few beats in its progression and that took me out of the movie a little.
But the subject matter and some of the visuals here were heart wrenching. The cast led by Parker and Armie Hammer were great, and if there was one Oscar nomination that this movie deserved was Best Actor for Parker.
What Parker did successfully with the story, maybe even more so than 12 Years A Slave, was showing, not just the inequality, but the ruthlessness and traumatic life experience of that time.
And that ending sequence with the music behind it reached deep into my core because it was conflicting with what the character has gone through but also what he did. But it also did remind me of that great ending of Braveheart.
