[Review] Hell Or High Water (8.5/10)

There will be no denying now of Chris Pine's capability because he is poised to get his first Oscar nomination with Hell Or High Water.

The way the director David MacKenzie crafted each scene has been masterful, which I am sure he will get a nomination as well for direction. The cinematography of the wide plains, long stretch of single road and small towns were nothing short of beautiful and authentic in the American culture.

The cast of Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges were outstanding. Foster is always great playing these kinds of roles but this one was probably his best yet. This was also Bridges best performance in the last few years, which were mired by some horrible movies like L.A.P.D. and Seventh Son.

And Pine was just so grounded in this role and gave such a quiet but electric performance that by the end, that final dialogue, there was just so much tension between the two characters.

But it's the writing that was the driving force behind the movie. The screenplay by Taylor Sheridan made each scene necessary and meaningful. Coupled with MacKenzie's choice of pauses in between dialogue that made the scenes something special and different.

Sheridan is becoming someone to take note of. His last movie, Sicario, came out of nowhere; and to follow up with this movie is definitely no fluke.

Expect Hell Or High Water to be a huge contender at the awards next month.
