[Review] Sing (6.5/10)
Watching the Sing trailers were like watching a few episodes of American Idol. That was why I was not interested to watch this movie at all, but then, once again, I heard some good things floating around about it, so I tried it.
It was not half bad, I have to say. It did start off like the beginning of an American Idol season. And in an uninspired and mediocre way, we got to meet each of these potential singers who came with their own personal baggage, just like any of those reality television shows.
But one gem among the whole cast was the character voiced by Matthew McConaughey; whose optimistic outlook and never-say-die attitude was just inspiring to watch. Also, his character arc was not just the best one but also kept me in my seat in the beginning when it was dull.
Of course, there was the lovable German accented pig Gunter, voiced by the talented Nick Kroll; who would be one of the most talked about after the movie is over.
There were some songs which I just didn't care for; but there were a few that I did quite enjoy and I caught myself surprised by it. I obviously didn't like it that much to remember what number it was but I was very impressed by the arrangement done to a very popular song and thought this version was even better than the original.
There was a couple of times where I thought the movie was very cheeky to sneak in very adult-themed moments that were completely unsuitable for kids. One was the bunnies singing and shaking their butts, while the other - which even now I still can't believe - was a group of animals spelling F-U-C-K in a song.
But while the storyline was the paint-by-numbers type, it was the story arc of McConaughey's character kept me interested. He made me care for the entire movie because I wanted to see how his story ended.
