[Review] Snowden (7/10)

Snowden, directed by Oliver Stone, had all the makings of an Oscar contender but I guess the execution fell short. Even a great performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt wasn't enough as the nomination continues to elude him this year.

Amidst all the great cast that included Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Nicolas Cage and Tom Wilkinson; all gave another great performances; even Shailene Woodley was good to watch and hopefully could wash off The Divergent Series stink.

But it was Rhys Ifans that stole the show for me. How far has he come from playing a buffoon in Nottinghill to the antagonist in The Amazing Spider-Man, and now giving his best performance here as a mentor of sorts to Edward Snowden, which I do consider another acting feat by Gordon-Levitt.

As far as an education piece, I believe the movie achieved what it set out to do. But as for an entertainment piece, there just wasn't enough hook to grab the audience as a standout of the year - unlike what The Big Short was able to do.

Still, we need movies like this to help inform the world what was going on and who the real heroes are and what they have sacrificed their lives for.
