[Review] Jackie (8/10)

Jackie had some powerful performances, notably from Natalie Portman and Peter Sarsgaard. In any other year, Portman may have won the honours for Best Actress in the Oscars. She was astounding.

This was a very, very heavy movie. I could appreciate the art on the first viewing but I will not be watching it again. A second watch may also highlight just how slow the movie was. But in every frame, Portman was a standout. Her portrayal of Jackie just swallowed her and she was nowhere to be found.

Sarsgaard was a great male lead for Portman to play off of. Billy Crudup was a very good in his own right as well, as he allowed Portman to shine. But generally the performances were just so good that even those short few scenes by Caspar Phillipson playing John F. Kennedy made me feel like he could have gotten a Best Supporting nomination as well had he had more screentime.

The movie gave us a lot of insights into who Jackie was, and how she had to pull herself together (sometimes unsuccessfully) right after when her husband was killed right in front of her. And that scene, my gosh, was horrific to experience. The director, Pablo Larrain, did not pull any punches.

Overall, a very solid movie which may or may not be too slow in certain parts. But the performances were worth the sit-through.
