[Review] Wonder Woman (8/10)

DC Films can now breathe a sigh of relief! Wonder Woman is a hit! Finally, the one movie that will potentially unite all DC fans and win over everyone else.

Still, this is not to say that Wonder Woman is a fantastic movie. It is a solid movie though, that delivers on all fronts.

And here is where the tide will shift a little bit for the superhero genre: A female-led superhero movie directed by a female director and is super successful. Even though Marvel Studios already has Captain Marvel and Sony Pictures already announced Silver & Black, also directed by a female director (Captain Marvel is directed by a couple); perhaps other studios will create more female-led action flicks, and open up more doors for female directors.

Director Patty Jenkins has done wonders with this movie, from the isolated island of Themyscira to the battlefield of World War I; from tight action sequences to levity sprinkled in; most of these were choreographed and directed very well.

But most importantly, the overall story made sense and the character development of Gal Gadot's Diana Prince was beautiful.

My favourite scenes would be Jenkins' direction for Gadot discovering the horror on the battlefield and then, ignoring all persuasions, suggestions and pleas; took matters into her own hands and entered the fight, officially, for the first time. And it wasn't fandom for me, it was the way Jenkins directed the entire sequence to make me feel what the character felt, and then her bravery, courage and principle took over.

But the negatives for me would be some minor things that add up to a bit of distractions. That alley fight between Gadot and Chris Pine with a few spies did not start off well with that headbutt. That felt out of character for Pine.

The Amazonians keeping to themselves when Zeus created that place for them to protect mankind was badly explained. Talk about powers and responsibility. And I would have liked a more solid explanation on why Diana could not, or did not return to Themyscira.

The villain, Ares, came out of the blue a little; and I'm not talking about the revelation, but how it was revealed.

Plus this whole thing about Gods walking among men was just difficult to sit well with me. Furthermore, why would Ares need to blend in? He could wipe out mankind if he wanted to with the powers he possessed. But this is more of the lore than the movie's fault.

But the cast was fantastic. David Thewlis and Danny Huston were as good as what they were given. Pine was brilliant, he was the heart of the movie. And as for Gadot, I caught myself surprised halfway through the first act because she did not look like she was acting. She was Wonder Woman!

My final gripe, what was Diana doing between World War I and present time? Why is she only showing up now (in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice)?

In any case, welcome to the fight, DC!
