[Review] Ouija: Origin Of Evil (6.5/10)
To be honest, I skipped Ouija: The Origin Of Evil when it came out in the cinemas. Even though the trailer intrigued me slightly, I wasn't ready to part hard-earned dollars for something that could just be jump-scares from start to finish.
But after watching it, I have to admit that there actually was a small but good storyline, sprinkled with the scares.
I for one want horror stories to be interesting and not scary - go figure. Jump scares are not my thing. So even when there were still loopholes around this, the coherence of the story through Mike Flanagan's directing made it kind of enjoyable.
The best part for it was the pacing. The beginning took its time to build up the mood and atmosphere. And in the middle, once the priest was involved; things began to move in a consistent and steady pace, building up to the final act.
The second best part of it was the characters co-written by Flanagan. So many times we have seen over and over the denials of silly characters and then getting killed off. But here, we have intelligent characters that were not frustrating to watch and follow. They knew how to put things together, because we the audience also know how to put things together.
And because of these two factors, this movie was surprisingly pleasant to watch. And that final scare, that was very well done because I was creeped out.
