[Review] Baby Driver (7/10)
Baby Driver has been one of my most anticipated movies since the time it was announced. And as we got to the release, I have only heard great things about it, such as, "best movie of the year so far".
Is it any surprise that I was going to be let down?
Edgar Wright is one of my favourite directors because I love his style of directing. And the way Baby Driver started, I knew I was in for a ride.
Ansel Elgort was a good choice. He has got the attitude and the look, and when he first started lip syncing to the song, that brought a smile to my face immediately.
As with every character that was introduced one by one, from Jon Bernthal to Jamie Foxx; I was loving every character and every story plot point.
Up until the end of the first half when Baby has finished his obligation to Kevin Spacey's character. That was when the pacing switched gear so considerably that I did not care for the romancing of Lily James' character in the laundromat.
Even though things picked up after that, the action with the cars did not. We saw what Baby could do with a car in the first half, but the second half gave us nothing new except for some generic car chase sequences.
But towards the end (SPOILER ALERT FOR THE NEXT TWO PARAGRAPHS), things started to fall apart as the heist team fell apart. And it became draggy as Jon Hamm's character just kept coming back even though this was a very Wright thing to do.
And Spacey went out of who his character was by caring too much and dying so easily in the process of helping Baby escape. These really spoiled the way the story ended for me.
Overall it was still enjoyable as the style of Wright kept me invested in the movie. And I particularly liked the performances by Spacey, Foxx and Eiza Gonzalez. And the diner scenes were really well crafted by Wright to build tension.
I am really curious to know, though, how Wright decided on the fates of Spacey and Hamm as I just couldn't get behind him. I wanted to love this movie but in the end I just could not.
