[Editorial] Top 10 Summer Blockbusters Of 2017

Summer is officially over and it has been quite disappointing for summer blockbusters. Many did not live up to expectations like War For The Planet Of The Apes and Baby Driver, while there are a few that did surprisingly better like Wonder Woman and Power Rangers.

Here is my top 10 summer movies, beginning at the tenth spot:

10. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (6.5/10)
A little paint-by-the-numbers but probably one of the better installments from the franchise in a while. Some of the jokes were on point, a good story throughout and Javier Bardem's antagonist was refreshing.

9. Alien: Covenant (7/10)
Not a popular choice, I'm sure, but it gave me what I expected. Coming off of Prometheus, this was such a better film in terms of story, characters as well as the sci-fi horror element. And it did bring back some memories of the great elements of Alien.

8. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword (7/10)
This may be argued as a bad fit in terms of story lore and director Guy Ritchie, but I thought Ritchie breathed fresh air into a classical mythology and fully enjoyed the magical elements in this movie. I would not mind a sequel.

7. Baby Driver (7/10)
This was my biggest disappointment of the summer because it is ranked so high up in a lot of movie pundits' list of great movies of the year. And I cannot understand how they overlook the drawn-out and over-extended third act, which did not deliver anymore slick driving skills from Baby.

6. Get Out (7.5/10)
This may be a cheat but Brunei got this movie late and it was the start of summer when I saw it. This was a very different kind of horror and it entertained me with how different it was from the other typical horror flair. And it was just so unexpected from Jordan Peele.

5. Dunkirk (8/10)
I may have given too high a point to this movie because on hindsight, it wasn't that great and quite forgettable. But Christopher Nolan directed a very realistic movie with very realistic sound effects, and those are definitely the very strong points of the movie.

4. War For The Planet Of The Apes (8/10)
This was another disappointing movie that did not live up to the hype that it has created, especially coming off of such a great second movie. However, I do understand that my let down stemmed from a misleading marketing effort and title that was just a wrong choice of word. Take those anticipation out and this was still a fantastic movie.

3. Spider-Man: Homecoming (8/10)
I understand why fans could be split with this movie but I appreciated what the producers wanted to do and tying it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it was those quieter moments directed by Jon Watts that stole most of the movie, instead of the bombastic action sequences.

2. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (8/10)
This would have been a great all rounder had it not been for that slow lull in the end of the second act. But the jokes were on point and, like the first movie, James Gunn just know how to introduce characters. And there were a couple of tear-jerking scenes that I loved.

1. Wonder Woman (8/10)
Who would have seen this coming? A DC movie in the top spot, and not only that, it is the biggest movie of the summer. The third act kind of fell apart a little and I thought the message of love was a little forced, but overall, the first two acts were a homerun, giving me some feels as well signifying that a superhero's first movie was doing it right.
