[Review] The Hitman's Bodyguard (6.5/10)
This movie felt like a 90's action flick as The Hitman's Bodyguard delivered competent action sequences with humour but threw logic out the window.
The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson in this buddy-cop genre made the movie. Some parts where Jackson had to deliver some action poses but failed badly because he looked so unnatural, but I could still see why they wanted him alongside Reynolds.
This was director Patrick Hughes' second big movie, right after The Expendables 3; and I thought he did well with the material handed to him. It was, however, the writing by Tom O'Connor that failed to hit the mark as this was his first big-budget action flick.
My biggest gripe with the movie was why the killers kept going after Reynolds' character when they should have just focused on Jackson's character as they already knew where he was headed. Just to deliver more action sequences, O'Connor chose to skip some logical steps in the story and hoped the audience left their brain outside the cinema.
Gary Oldman as the main antagonist was wasted as casting an unknown would have worked just as well in that role. Elodie Yung did not get enough choreographed action scenes and was also a wasted talent.
But to see the two leads interacting and squabbling with each other while trying to get some life lessons in, coupled with smaller but equally funny scenes with Selma Hayek even though some small parts had cheesy background music to denote a touching scene in progress; the entertainment value was good enough to sustain the running time. I ended having some fun with this movie.
