[Review] The Death Of "Superman Lives" : What Happened? (7/10)
A documentary about the making and cancellation of the movie Superman Lives, that was supposed to star Nicolas Cage.
Director Jon Schnepp directed a very interesting documentary, gathering a lot of old footage plus interviewed a lot of key people who were involved with the production side of the movie. And the most notable of them was Kevin Smith, who did the first draft of the movie, which later changed hands again twice and ultimately went to Dan Gilroy.
It also painted a negative light on then-producer Jon Peters, who in my observation was a closer to a joke than a producer; with a lot of the interviewees recalling negative experiences with him. Which also brought a lot of humour to the documentary and were some of the highlight, laugh out loud moments.
But was he the ultimate reason that the movie got cancelled after three years in production? That was not concrete even though it would be easy to point the finger at him because three years was a long time and a lot of money.
The middle of the documentary was about some technical aspects, costume and art pieces for the movie - all too technical for my speed and interest so I was not that bothered with them.
But after watching this, the notion of having Cage be the man of steel is quite interesting today. And although the original Batman movies by Tim Burton, who was supposed to direct Superman Lives, do not hold up today; we could have gotten a very different movie.
And since that did not happen, that was why Bryan Singer was able to give us Superman Returns with Brandon Routh, which to this day I still enjoy watching.
