[Review] How To Be A Latin Lover (6.5/10)

Ken Marino usually appears in movies in comedic roles, How To Be A Latin Lover was his first directorial feature; and it was a good start.

The story itself was not an original piece of writing, and it was heavy on cliches. But the gem here was the comedic timing and humour of Eugenio Derbez as the Latin lover.

Derbez's performance was definitely the highlight here. His character could be said to be in the same level as Napolean Dynamite, not exactly original but a great character portrayed by the actor. And although Derbez may not be catapulted to the next level of stardom, he won't be pigeon holed because he has been around far longer than Jon Heder who portrayed Napolean Dynamite.

This movie also had Rob Lowe as another gold digger and he suited the role perfectly, playing a supporting role to Derbez. Salma Hayek also has a great role that was a lot more meaty than what she gets these days. Both Lowe and Hayek's chemistry with Derbez were great and helped to carry the humour as well.

The only issue here was that nothing about it was very original in terms of plot points. And when it tried to reach for the heart, it kind of fell short a little bit. But overall, I had a lot of laughs with this one and enjoyed it enough.
