[Review] Stronger (7/10)
This is why you would want Jake Gyllenhaal in a movie that needs emotional performances. He elevates a good film to make it even better. Stronger was such a case.
Gyllenhaal once again embodied the character that if you are not paying attention, you will not see him the actor, but only his character.
He also lifted Tatiana Maslani's performance, playing opposite him and having to reach his equal onscreen.
This movie could easily have been a sequel or spin-off to Mark Wahlberg's Patriots Day, if he only made a cameo; because both movies could have tied in very easily to each other.
But it was the middle of the movie that I did not know where the story was taking me. It felt like a lot of scenes were just fillers and did not contribute enough to the ending of the movie. It slowed down just a little before reaching the climactic scene, which was both leads in the car and having a big fight.
The emotions that the actors threw out were so real that you really felt for them. It boiled down to a realistic portrayal of a relationship in that community and environment, and no one was right or wrong, it just was what it was and both had to make decisions for themselves before making it for their relationship.
The ending itself was also a powerful life lesson and I just hope that it was not a Hollywood made-up scene but more factual than fiction.
