[Review] Justice League (5.5/10)
To sum up Justice League in just one word, it would have to be "awkward".
It is quite obvious that there were two different visions for this movie, one of Zack Snyder's and one of Joss Whedon's - though the latter's was a weak representation of what he would have brought to the table. The whole story felt very disjointed jumping from one scene to the next and thus, very difficult to enjoy.
I felt that with the reshoots, which was reportedly to be around 15% to 20%; though more likely to be at least 30% - this has taken a good chunk of the initial budget. So there has to be an opportunity cost somewhere and it seemed like it was taken from the CGI budget.
The CGI of this movie looked quite bad - better than Baywatch (but what isn't) and worse than Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Not only that, but the final battle with all the Parademons seemed to have been cut short because; while there were thousands of those insectoids flying around, the Justice League only took down a handful of them before going straight for the big bad.
And Superman (c'mon, this can't be a spoiler - how can there be a Justice League movie without Superman) was very overpowered in this movie, to a point of ridicule and underwhelming for the boss fight.
Let's dive into SPOILER territory now.
The resurrection of Superman had nothing to do with those soil floating up from his coffin at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. You can't watch that and then come into this because some plot points, too, were incoherent (though such was the nature of BvS to begin with). Batman saying Superman was the beacon of hope was laughable because he spent more than an hour in BvS trying to kill Superman for very weak reasons. And Superman died right after, so nothing of that sort has been established in Batman's eyes.
All the science behind the resurrection was just as illogical and badly presented as how Doomsday was brought to life by Lex Luthor in the previous film. Everytime anyone went into Zord's ship seemed to know exactly how to work the alien tech.
And with Superman gone, it seemed that the world has gone into a dark place. But we now have Wonder Woman, why couldn't she have filled Superman's shoes. There were no supervillains between then and now that Wonder Woman couldn't handle.
The Parademons feeding of fear also did not make sense. A lot of humans were around them who were afraid of them, but they still lived. The Flash was scared half the time in battle and yet they did not attack him, even when he was lying on the ground. But once Steppenwolf was afraid, all of them attacked him. The story was not following its own rule and that is just horrible storytelling.
Wonder Woman felt awkward, very unlike her solo movie. Is Aquaman American? And a West Coast surfer dude? Because he hailed from somewhere else but yet his American accent was very strong.
That one scene when Cyborg rushed in to save his father, he broke character. That was just bad directing. Batman as the world's best detective was very emotional when it came to Superman's death. As for The Flash, he probably fared the best out of this mess; though I couldn't stand his poses and that very awkward running.
And Superman and that CGI lips. Horrendous. Especially the opening scene with the footage, was that even worth it, Mr Whedon? Almost every scene with Superman, you could see something very off especially when he spoke. Which also meant that Whedon reshot most of Henry Cavill's scenes.
If I were to say something good about this movie, it's "they've tried". They tried to change to change the tone, they tried to make it good, but still it fell short in the end.
