[Review] Only The Brave (8/10)
Joseph Kosinski needed a hit and he's got one with Only The Brave. His previous two full-length features, TRON: Legacy and Oblivion, did not do well so this is also a pleasant surprise to me.
Kosinski has weaved this story masterfully because, unlike his other two movies where they come with some action, this is fully on the drama side. Moreover, the dramatic side of things for the previous two movies slowed to a drag. Here, it suited the tone and pace. I would argue that Kosinski is better off with drama instead of action, for the time being.
The story centred heavily on Josh Brolin's character and his relationship with Jennifer Connelly, and also to a certain extent with Miles Teller. Brolin and Connelly's performances were great because they had to hold the story together to achieve the impact in the end, otherwise the ending would have failed which meant the entire movie failed.
Teller, once again, showed why he is a talent in this business Fantastif Four notwithstanding. He disappeared into this role and I did not see the actor at all, especially with the dyed hair. And that was all he needed to disappear.
What was most interesting for me was to learn that there are these special fire fighting forces to tackle forest fires in America. It is a problem there and it is dangerous. And in this movie, I got to learn just a tiny bit how they stop fires from spreading; and I found that to be quite educational.
The second act of the movie still ran a little bit slow for me, and left me wondering where the story is headed; but everything was a built up to the final act.
Based on true events, so if you know the facts then you know how the story ended. It was a heartbreak of a story and Kosinski delivered it with just the right amount of everything without being painfully obvious or cliched.
