According to Lucasfilm, via ComingSoon, Star Wars Episdoe VIII - The Last Jedi's director, Rian Johnson, has been tasked to develop a whole new trilogy for the franchise to move forward after Episode IX.
This news once again cements the speculation that Johnson has created and filmed a brilliant movie in The Last Jedi that the studios are very happy with in order for them to pass him the torch for the next trilogy.
And this is also a very smart move in marketing. Nothing to increase confidence than to announce the director is placed in charge of the franchise for the next decade.
