[Review] Daddy's Home 2 (6/10)
Here's a rare comedy sequel that is better than the original, just by a little bit.
Daddy's Home 2 had the advantage of having John Lithgow delivering a great comedic and heartfelt performance; even when Mel Gibson for the most part looked like a miscast.
Gibson's forced laughter and smirks looked very fake, which was strange because this role on paper fit him perfectly and it was definitely something in his wheelhouse.
But Lithgow stole scenes every time he was on. His comedic timing was so on point that even for jokes that were not new or original, they caught me by surprise and made me laugh out loud.
The onscreen relationship between Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell had the opportunity and freedom to be further along in this universe and that made them more fun to watch.
However, the weakest link definitely was Alessandra Ambrosio. Her acting was so bad that she did not seem like she exist in this movie, hence there was no reason for her to exist. The producers probably did not think they would be making a sequel when they first cast her for the part in the first movie. But she certainly should have been recast for this one.
John Cena too had a nice small role in this one, and he definitely fits comedic roles.
The middle of the movie was definitely slower than I would have liked, especially when the whole family decided to do the birth of Jesus in the manger; that was painful to sit through.
But the ending at the cineplex brought it back nicely, with a hilarious sequence starting with the kiss that was very unexpected and not many comedies can pull off lately.
Overall, there was some good laughs to be had but you are definitely not missing out if you skipped this.
